WHAT ARE GIBS?
Whenever a ship is destroyed in FTL it is supposed to fly apart, splitting up into separate debris pieces. These pieces are commonly referred to as "Gibs".
If no Gibs are available for a ship, it will disappear when destroyed (aside from the weapons).
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THESE ADDONS?
These addons provide programmatically generated Gibs wherever they are currently missing in the Multiverse mod (MV) and The Renegade Collection (TRC). This currently affects more than a thousand different ships for MV and several dozen for TRC.
The intention of these addons is to provide a decent temporary solution until all remaining Gibs are manually drawn.
Proper physics behaviour for the Gibs is ensured. Weapons are attached to the matching Gibs.
These Gibs were automatically generated using the scipy SLIC algorithm which clusters the original ship images with a trade-off between location and color; several post-process improvement steps are performed to further improve the results (less artifacts, dynamically colored metal-bits, ...)
...WHAT? PICS PLS!
Here is an example:
This is how it looks in-game (for comparison, right side is the same ship without the addon installed):
HOW DO I INSTALL THE ADDONS?
Installer:
These addons are shipped with the official Multiverse installer. If you want to install them, ensure the coresponding box is checked, e.g. for MV:
Direct Download/Update:
If you are not using the installer, you can directly download the addons here:
for MV 5.4: Google Drive Link for downloading GenGibs for MV
for TRC 2.3: Google Drive Link for downloading GenGibs for TRC
In Slipstream, ensure the MV-GenGibs-Addon is placedbetween below Multiverse Assets and before below Multiverse Data; the TRC-GenGibs-Addon goes below the TRC-Addon.
ANYTHING ELSE I SHOULD CONSIDER?
Note, that adding these Gibs will increase memory consumption for the game.
It will also increase the initial loading time by roughly 20% for MV.
Also, keep in mind that all Gibs are generated by a complicated algorithm, so there might be graphical glitches in a few of the Gibs, usually these are minor. In any case it will not affect your gameplay.
CAN I GENERATE GIBS FOR MY OWN ADDON?
Yes, for details checkout the GitHub project for G.L.A.I.V.E.
