I figured it might help motivate me to post a bit of a project log here for an addon I'm working on. Disharmony
This mod is intended to expand on the Engi, especially the Separatist movement, because I felt like they didn't get enough focus in base Multiverse.
Features (bold means completed, at least as far as coding goes):
- New elite Separatist crew, the Fragmented Engi!
- This new subrace combines elements of the separatist normal and nano modes, but their main feature is that they automatically generate a number of nanobot swarms, autonomous crew that can't man systems but will automatically repair and repel boarders. Each Fragmented can sustain a limited number of swarms simultaneously, and will stop producing them when that limit is reached.
- Two new unique crew:
- Disharmony (name will probably change), one of the original separatists that acts as an even stronger Fragmented Engi,
- The Harmony Interface, a physical form taken by the Harmony itself when it wants to take a direct hand in events. This Engi provides significant buffs to all friendly Engi, and if killed will migrate to a new Engi body if one is available (still working out the bugs in this ability)
- New ships! Plans for a Fragmented cruiser with type A, B and C variants, and two crewsers, one for each of the aformentioned unique crew
- Fragmented cruisers will have very limited crew capacity, being forced to rely on their swarms to carry out maintainance and fight boarders.
- A special augment for them that provides various buffs for powering different systems, to represent that the Fragmented are often autonomous extensions of their ships. For example, powering the weapons buffs combat damage, while powering drone increases the number of swarms that can be created
- New Sector: The Harmony Quarantine Zone
- Learn about the origins of the Engi Separatist movement, and choose to side with Harmony or the Separatists
- New events based around the Fragmented
I'm currently working on writing the main quest events for the new sector. Once that's done I need to teach myself art to make some new sprites for the fragmented and their ships. If anyone has any suggestions for interesting events or maybe some special weapons or drones, I'd be interested in hearing them. Features (bold means completed, at least as far as coding goes):

Just so you know, there is a future update centered about Harmony-Separatist content, which shouldn't be too long after 5.4. (This isn't a call to desist, it's just information in case you truly weren't aware of our plans to overhaul Engi content)

I wasn't, but I'm glad to hear it (I'm not much of a writer, so I imagine the official release will be better than what I had planned anyway). Thanks for the heads up, I'll probably focus more on the ships and crew types and focus on making it fit more lorewise once the update drops.

First release! File attached for download
I think I've finally got this to a state where it's playable. Currently you're unlikely to see anything new unless you play as the new cruiser (there's only one event that's changed; the Separatist trying to blow up the Harmony Link), and said cruiser is just something I quickly threw together for testing purposes. I think my next step is going to be to make some unique ships, rather than the modified Engi C I currently have set up.
If anyone gives it a go, I'd appreciate any comments or criticisms you may have (I doubt it's properly balanced yet)
Features:
- New crew: - Fragmented Engi: currently only available from the Separatist Link event, the new ship, or cheating (crew engi_fragmented) - Disharmony: new unique crew. Only available from the new ship or cheat (crew unique_disharmony) - Harmony Interface: new unique crew. Only available from the new ship or cheat (crew unique_interface)
- Two types of nanoswarm, can be created either by a crew power or by a weapon
- New(ish) ship, the Fragmented Cruiser - basically just a testing ship at this point, has every new thing added by the mod, plus a couple of Engi Defenders to show off the Interface's death effect.
- New weapon - Nanoswarm Bomb: created a pair of self replicating nanoswarms, with have very little health, can only sabotage, and very slowly passively drain the health of all crew in the same room. Very dangerous if the enemy can't stamp them out quickly. Warning: Using this on your own ship is a very bad idea.
- New Augment - Nanoship: provides buff to all fragmented engi and their swarms based on the amount of power allocated to certain systems.

New version, V0.2, Out now Changelog: - Removed Harmony Interface from the player ship for now (I haven't been able to get it tor work properly; when it dies, it replaces any crewmember regardless of race. Also if you have a Clonebay then it effectively duplicates itself)
- Also removed the two Engi Defenders; player ship now starts with the Disharmony unique crewmember, and two Fragmented Engi
- Added a limit to how many Self-Replicating Nanoswarms can be created by the Nanoswarm bomb; I had a few crashes due to having completely filled the enemy ship then having mind control wear off.
- Made it so Self-Replicating Nanoswarms slowly die on the ship that spawned them; they can still be used on your own ship to briefly distract enemy boarders in a pinch, but as least now a misclick won't fill your entire ship with nanoswarm, making movement impossible and causing crashes
- Various minor bugfixes and balances tweaks
Also, I kept restarting for testing purposes up until now, but I've finally completed my first run with the mod (on normal difficulty). The Nanoswarm Bomb is very effective against any ship that lacks protection against boarder (autoships without door system, No O2 Separatist ships, and the flagship once I'd depopulated it), but requires a lot of support to be useful against anything else. The Fragmented Engi were decently effective, with their swarms making enemy boarders much less of a threat; I might wind up reducing how many swarms can be maintained per Fragmented (currently its 2 each, 3 for Disharmony, plus one for each powered level of life support)
